I've been collecting old jeans for years in expectation of repurposing them into a quilt. The impending wedding of my niece Kim was the perfect opportunity to finally get to work. It was so much fun to put the squares together and see how the different shades of denim contrasted and complemented each other. Even within a single pair of jeans there were so many different hues from years of wear and washing. There was one pair of black jeans but the rest started out as basic blues.
I love the stitching from the back pockets that adds to the design, and was surprised to discover the printed Levis logo on the inside of the front pocket. I never noticed that in all the years of wearing Levis! So I used it in the accompanying pillow. You can also see in several places the shadow of pockets that protected the fabric underneath from fading.
I backed the quilt with quality fleece and the result is a delightfully heavy weight quilt that is so very cozy.
Darryl just donated another pair of jeans, so I look forward to making another one of these in the future. I've saved all remaining pieces of the jeans. Perhaps the waistlines would make good tote bag straps? Nothing goes to waste.
