Cycling TShirt Quilt

After 16 years of riding the Pan Mass Challenge with Team Five and Dime, Darryl had a lot of TShirts. He picked out these 9 for me to make a quilt out of, and now we use the quilt every day. That our daughter helped design some of the shirts is added value. This was my first TShirt quilt, and I learned some valuable lessons. Now I know that not all TShirts can be ironed. The iRide image left its mark on my ironing board, permanently. I was surprised to find the knit fabric easy to work with, after fusing lightweight interfacing to each. I was even able to free motion quilt some of them.

There was too much blank black space on the center shirt, so I added fabric strips to represent the road, crossed them to represent an intersection, and machine embroidered the names of all the loved ones we've ridden the PMC for. At a distance, or when its a small thumbnail image, I realize it may look like a skull and crossbones. It is not.

To fill the blank space on the green Brain Tumor Society shirt, I cut small images from two shirts, and appliqued them onto the green background. The one on the left is a pocket. I thought a pocket might come in handy to keep a snack in, or the TV remote, but no one has used it yet.

The backing is soft, warm fleece, and everyone loves to snuggle under it; especially comfy when atop all the sofa cushions piled on the floor.
